Hana Lee/Chapter 4 A-1/summer writing

The formal definition of work is doing a job in order to make money. However, there are various reasons as to why people work aside from money. People work to pursue their passions, to gain experiences, and to make connections

People work for the pursuit of their passion. There are artists who work because it adds excitement and meaning to their life. For instance, the famous British novelist, J.K. Rowling had an ambition to be a writer. After she graduated in a university, she worked as a bilingual secretary, but lost her job. Then, she decided to pursue her passion which is writing. She began to write about Harry Potter. When she finished her first copy of Philosopher's Stone, her agent helped her publish it. However, it took twelve publishing houses to reject them until they found an editor who started paying her. After a few weeks, the book became a success and she continued to write more books. The writer spent many time and effort focusing on her work because she simply enjoyed it. This proves that some people work because they find it fulfilling to pursue their passions.

People work to gain new experiences. They enjoy working because their work gives them the opportunity to learn from the people around them. For example, my friend, who is a businessman goes to work because he wants to practice negotiating and persuading his customers to buy his engines. After meeting many different customers, he kind of knows how each customer is different and figure how to handle them. Furthermore, he will get an idea of what works and what does not when he tries to convince his next customers. He goes to work because he wants to gain as much as experience as he can in order for him to avoid mistakes and do better in the future.

Despite the basic human necessities, people work to find a deeper meaning in their lives. They pursue their passions because it gives them a direction in life and makes them feel fully fulfilled. They also work because they want to gain new challenges and opportunities in the workplace.

What makes a good worker? If you were a manager, how would you like your workers to be?

I believe creativity and loyalty make one a good worker. No trait is enough to be a good worker. The more you have good characteristics, the better. Among those, however, creativity and loyalty is the new best features of being a good worker in any workplace.

First of all, creativity makes every worker a leader. By presenting their great ideas to the company of their own, creative workers carry the whole group in accordance with their lead. For example, when a new recruit in Google come up with a new business model, they would share it by having a presentation in a holistic level. In this way, the new worker's plan would be accepted as one of the new ideas that the company would pursue, and this is how a single newbie can influence a 21st century company. Also, they inspire the group to become more motivational. Even though a worker's idea was not sufficient to move the crowd in the company, their attempt itself can be a trigger to change the way of thinking or break mannerisms.

Loyalty is another necessity that a worker in a good company should have. It is a yardstick about how a worker respects their group and is dedicated to it. Being loyal to one's group means the worker respects their company and his workers. And in order to be so, the worker should think that the company fits to him and improves himself in a number of ways. For example, if you think your company is not smart enough to tuck you in their mediocre department, you want to leave them. On the other hand, if your company provides you a lot of insights and rooms to grow up by yourself, that company is surely considered from you as great. So, it is not the absolute loyalty that you must obey the rules and unconditionally pursue your team's ideas that I am talking about. Loyalty in this context means you choose to admire and are willing to follow the group for a long time with your self-driven dedication and sacrifice. This is critical in cherishing every worker's ideas and thus becoming a greater, a futuristic model of company for the next generation. You can find examples about this from many companies in Silicon Valley like Google and Apple, which are considered to treat their employees well and also remaining top tiers in their field. And also this is why we call them a post-bureaucracy. They are the prototypes for what the company has to be in the future.

In sum, creativity and loyalty are the essential traits that a 21st century worker should develop. Their creativity will make the team accomplish more and their loyalty would keep them united.

What makes a good worker.

The definition of a good worker is different for every manager. I have never thought about the qualities of a good worker but I can suggest some of them. I don't think that you will find something revolutionary in my writing but I hope it will become a sort of reminder for those who aspire to reach career endeavors.  I believe that responsibility, diligence, competence and determination are the crucial characteristics of any good worker.

Responsibility. The manager does not need excuses, he needs a result. That is why responsibility is a quality that is so valuable for a good employee. A good worker should be able to make decisions on their own, to answer and make up for their mistakes. Work on the principle of "work should be done no matter how well" can lead to the fact that you will be fired. Companies do not need employees who do not want to take responsibility for anything.

Diligence. It is important to be diligent and willing to work. All employees' actions should be as effective as possible and directed to the development of the company. It is very important to be immersed in work and pose oneself as a hard-working person. Nevertheless, I also think that worker should know his limits and take a rest if he needs it.

Competence. The fulfillment of all orders at the highest level, the ability to make decisions independently, and working without constant clarifications are the keys to success.

Determination. Determination is a valuable trait. The employee should not be afraid to show initiative, not to give in to difficulties, and achieve the set goals.

The "portrait" of the ideal employee is different for each manager. It can be supplemented and reduced, depending on the specifics of the work of the organization and the position held. However, in order to motivate employees to work qualitatively, we need to develop a system of motivation and management. So, the employees' personal traits and qualities are as important as actions of those who are in charge of everything.

                       Why do people work?

I suppose everybody has a question in his mind which is why I should work or what I work for. It 's natural for us to get the answers like money-earning or breadwinning. However, in a more positive context in real life, having a job could help meet our self-actualization needs , as well as spare people from vice.

First of all, working in an ideal industry is the most direct method for realizing one's ambitions. People are in need of self-actualization, which force them to think about how to make their dreams come true and indentify themselves in their career life. Especially for college graduates, work offers an opportunity to display their skills and helps to apply their knowledge in practice. In turn, the experience of work makes them better understand theoretical knowledge they have learned in books. And I believe that achievement of their ambition outweigh the contentment brought by money.

In most cases, vice is associated with the absence of work. Those people who don't want to work would get into a bat habit of idleness and waste their life in gloom. It can also be seen that people who need money to live but refuse to work easily trapped in such bad habits as ,heavy drinking ,drug abuse. Once effected by those dangerous vice, people would get trouble with the law.

In conclusion, work means far more than salary but a way of pursuing what we want for our entire life and avoid cultivating vice. In this way, it can help provide people a happy and healthy life.

3. How can we solve the conflict of working mothers? In other words, what should society do to help women balance work and family if they must or want to work?

Better Life for Working Mothers

Today, unlike the past, the number of working mothers in Korea has increased. Because it costs a lot of money to raise children in Korea, many women are choosing to work as well as their husbands. However, working mothers face more problems than fathers do and the difficulties are not completely resolved yet now because of a fear of career break, social atmosphere, and so on. Solutions for these problems can divided into two aspects, institutionally and cognitively.

One of the most problems working mothers face is a fear of their career break. Working moms are placed to choose whether they will continue to work or not when they have a baby or decide to raise children. Josee D from British Columbia, a working mom whom I interviewed, told me that she was worried about her reinstatement because her career was totally off-track due to staying years at home to raise children. This is not only the case o f Josee but also other working moms worry the same thing. To release their concerns, companies should ensure returns of working moms after using maternity and child-care leave. That way, working moms can both leave and come back to company without anxiety.

The other problem working moms have is related with an atmosphere within company. It is true that systems for working moms are established; however, women should grasp a situation in their company when they are going to have maternity or child-care leave. Because of their absence, company has to hire a substitute to work their job and most companies which hate disruptive and costly work in Korea are not pleased with it. As exact as the woman who is going to have leave hands over her works to the next person, leaving issues are not a big deal in company, in fact. Companies and society have to change perception of working mothers. They should think working moms as returning talented people for company.

In conclusion, working mothers have concerns about their career break and difficult feelings within company to use the leave. We can relieve their concerns by ensuring their returns to company and changing recognition of them as talented people who will be back again.

Dooseok Lee / Chapter four initial draft / Summer writing

Working Moms Do Care

Do you think working moms tend to be more selfish and self-centered to moms who stay home and take care of the child? If you do, you should re-think about it. There are many of moms who chose to work for the family's own good, and also many of them takes good care of their children even better than moms staying home. There are two main reasons why all of working moms should never be blamed, rather reappraised.

The first reason is, while some of working moms choose to work for their own well-being, most of them choose to work for their family finances. Not all of families start their living in a fancy apartment. Many of them start in a small apartment with a lease on. In order to provide family with good neighborhood and education, working mom is not a choice but a must. I want to give my family's personal experience via an interview I took with my mother. She referred that she never felt self-centered about working after marriage. On the other hand, she said that it was very suffering to go to work right after giving birth to me. She referred that few decades ago, firms didn't provide fancy, long childbirth holidays like they do these days. That's why, few years later, she quit working after knowing that she's expecting a second child, which is my brother. However, we can find that working moms could be hard and stressful, but help the household financially.

Second, working moms do care for their children, and they do everything they can to minimize the gap of unavailability to spend time more. Just because they don't spend more time with kids than housewives, that never means they don't care. With the money they make, they can send their kids to good preschools, also put a personal tutor to teach various things when they are gone working. Also, working moms may feel proud that with the hard work at the firm they can raise the child better. This kind of feeling can create good atmosphere for the family, which the child looks up upon their mothers more, and respecting them.

Of course, there could be cases where moms don't care for the child and the family while working for their own good and self-realization. As I stated, not all of moms are not like that. Therefore, I believe that it is important for moms to be more proud of themselves. Also, people should not think create a image on working moms that they are self-serving, which is mostly not true.

Kim Nam Ha/ CH4 First Draft/ Pose & Paragraph

The original story of 'The ant and the grasshopper' is the story that gives the readers a message of the consequences that we get at the end of hard work. In shorten, while grasshopper lives dissolute life in the summer, and keeps himself working for the winter. Eventually, grasshopper starves for food during the winter, whereas, the ant survives the winter with no worries. The grasshopper seek food from the ant but he refuses. In contemporary setting, the story starts with two brothers.

The older brother, George is hard working, straight forward man. He has lived his life productive, austerity for his retirement. The younger brother, Tom enjoys his life and spends money careless. Tom refuses to work or continue his marriage. Tom tells lies about getting back on the right track and takes money from his brother George and spends money on buying Jewelry and cars. On the other hand, George worked so hard to save up money. In the end, Tom with luck becomes rich by marrying old lady which her life is around the corner. George outrages and cannot bear the jealousy toward his younger brother. The story of two brothers can be very realistic in our lives.

The message about the Maugham's story is deeply based on the modern world. George's type of life could be general for all the people who needs to earn money for a living. It is very frustrating and beats me that many years of working is what I also have to face in the near future. Whereas, with no pain for earning and with no stress of working, Tom's type of life seems to be so joyful and so seductive. I can snatch off anything that I want, and I can literally buy expensive cars, house, and fancy fashion items. However, the thought of comparing his life to my life makes me more miserable and depressing. I was so shocked and at the same time envied how he enjoyed his life. But this does not mean that my happiness can be found in his trace of life. I have to find my own true happiness.

What is the ultimate goal of life? "Goal is to live happily." These days, getting a job, getting married, having my own house are very difficult. Through many competition and death match, only the few and the selected ones are chosen to live good quality of life. Luxurious life follows to the people who tried hard and earned it by their blood and tears of effort. However, losers who failed to be selected did not just sit around and suck their thumbs. They have also tried their best to have better life. Unfortunately, due to rising competition and higher expectation, new generation thinks rather live life shortly with enjoyment then live long miserably. Sometimes they wager money on lotto, or try to allure old rich people to break through their unhappiness.  Happiness do not come from money. Happiness can be found from people who cares for us loves us. We tend to get used to love or care that we receive from others. We should not forget and must express our love in return. Saying "Thank you for loving me".  This will surely make us happy enough. Because we know that people who loves us put great effort into us.

The older brother George compares himself with his own brother during his whole life. Tom's life was enjoyable and feverish however, what George's life is much more happier and deserves to be loved by others. The lesson of this fables is that if I compare myself with others I can never be happy because, there is always someone who is better or luckier than me.
