Hana Lee/Chapter 4 A-1/summer writing

The formal definition of work is doing a job in order to make money. However, there are various reasons as to why people work aside from money. People work to pursue their passions, to gain experiences, and to make connections

People work for the pursuit of their passion. There are artists who work because it adds excitement and meaning to their life. For instance, the famous British novelist, J.K. Rowling had an ambition to be a writer. After she graduated in a university, she worked as a bilingual secretary, but lost her job. Then, she decided to pursue her passion which is writing. She began to write about Harry Potter. When she finished her first copy of Philosopher's Stone, her agent helped her publish it. However, it took twelve publishing houses to reject them until they found an editor who started paying her. After a few weeks, the book became a success and she continued to write more books. The writer spent many time and effort focusing on her work because she simply enjoyed it. This proves that some people work because they find it fulfilling to pursue their passions.

People work to gain new experiences. They enjoy working because their work gives them the opportunity to learn from the people around them. For example, my friend, who is a businessman goes to work because he wants to practice negotiating and persuading his customers to buy his engines. After meeting many different customers, he kind of knows how each customer is different and figure how to handle them. Furthermore, he will get an idea of what works and what does not when he tries to convince his next customers. He goes to work because he wants to gain as much as experience as he can in order for him to avoid mistakes and do better in the future.

Despite the basic human necessities, people work to find a deeper meaning in their lives. They pursue their passions because it gives them a direction in life and makes them feel fully fulfilled. They also work because they want to gain new challenges and opportunities in the workplace.

  1. Hi, I'm taekmin
I liked the example you used, J.K. Rowling and Harry potter made your writing more interesting. I also like the idea that passion and opportunity makes us work. Thanks.

  2. Yes, there are many different reasons why people work more than just money. I agree with all of your reasons and I want to say people work to keep their loved ones well as an additional reason. You are supporting your main points with examples and the flow of your writing is general to specific and back to general. If there are things to be added or changed, I suggest you to tell some more about what you are going to say in the intro and write separate two paragraphs for gaining experiences and making connections. This way, your essay will be clearer and more organized.:)
