Having fun and trust

What are friends? People have friends and they know which one is their friend are and which is not. But, how do they know that? We usually don't think of the definition of friendship even though we have many friends. From the word friendship, we can see that friendship is about relation between friends. So, finding out what that relation is important to define friendship. Friendship needs two components one is fun and the other is trust.

The most important thing in between friends is having fun or enjoying something together because it starts a friendship. I think to make friends, there must be something fun happening to them. If there is nothing good happening between them, the two people would have no chance to get close. For example, if we think of a situation where some people are having a dinner for the first time, it would be very awkward until someone bring up an interesting topic to talk about and it will give the crowd a fun time talking with each other. Such moment will give people time to enjoy the moment together and make them friends.

The second thing that is important in friendship is trust. Having fun is important to start a friendship but trust is important because it maintains friendship. If friends have no trust in their relationship, they would never get close enough to be a real friend even though they have lots of fun together. How can you rely on a person that you don't trust? How can you call such a person a friend?

In conclusion, I think that the definition of friendship is a relation between friends, which includes fun and trust. Something fun at the start and trust for the rest of the friendship.

  1. Hi, Taekmin!
Overall, I think that you gave a good perspectives on the definition of a good friend. I liked that you provided some examples too. However, I think your views mostly reflect "agentic"friendships that are closer to men. Thus, fun activities are important to have close relations. Women can maintain friendship without any particular activities, they just need to share their emotions wih someone.
    Thank you!

  2. I liked your example of importance of having fun in friendship. The paragraph about trust has less explanation and no examples. I would like to read about trust more. Also, the last sentence seems to be incomplete. - Inessa Kim
