Kim Chaeha/Ch.4 first draft/summer56

3. How can we solve the conflict of working mothers? In other words, what should society do to help women balance work and family if they must or want to work?

Better Life for Working Mothers

Today, unlike the past, the number of working mothers in Korea has increased. Because it costs a lot of money to raise children in Korea, many women are choosing to work as well as their husbands. However, working mothers face more problems than fathers do and the difficulties are not completely resolved yet now because of a fear of career break, social atmosphere, and so on. Solutions for these problems can divided into two aspects, institutionally and cognitively.

One of the most problems working mothers face is a fear of their career break. Working moms are placed to choose whether they will continue to work or not when they have a baby or decide to raise children. Josee D from British Columbia, a working mom whom I interviewed, told me that she was worried about her reinstatement because her career was totally off-track due to staying years at home to raise children. This is not only the case o f Josee but also other working moms worry the same thing. To release their concerns, companies should ensure returns of working moms after using maternity and child-care leave. That way, working moms can both leave and come back to company without anxiety.

The other problem working moms have is related with an atmosphere within company. It is true that systems for working moms are established; however, women should grasp a situation in their company when they are going to have maternity or child-care leave. Because of their absence, company has to hire a substitute to work their job and most companies which hate disruptive and costly work in Korea are not pleased with it. As exact as the woman who is going to have leave hands over her works to the next person, leaving issues are not a big deal in company, in fact. Companies and society have to change perception of working mothers. They should think working moms as returning talented people for company.

In conclusion, working mothers have concerns about their career break and difficult feelings within company to use the leave. We can relieve their concerns by ensuring their returns to company and changing recognition of them as talented people who will be back again.

  1. The whole essay was clear for me, except one word you mentioned. In third paragraph, in the last sentence you say that companies and society should think working moms as returning talented people for company. What do you mean by "talented"?

  2. I liked your esaay because it demostrated ideas and the issuae clearly. However, I think you should give more concrete ideas on how you would resolve the problems of working moms. You introduced some decisions but it feels that you should comment more on them.
