Kim Chaeha/Ch.3 first draft/summer 56

Does friendship always benefit?

Friendship and love are two main feelings of our lifetime relationship. Seneca, a Roman dramatist and philosopher once said, "Friendship always benefits; love sometimes injures." Maybe Seneca had or had seen only good friends. I do not agree with his statement. There sure is friendship which injures us like spurious friends, friends' betrayal, and so on.

One typical injuring friendship is friends who are spurious. Relationship with spurious friends seems intimate though, it is not true. These friends do not care or think about the other; in fact, they keep the relationship because they have certain purposes. For example, when I was a middle school student, I saw a girl(A) who wants to be a friend with the other girl who was very rich. A knew that the rich girl gave expensive accessories and bought special meals to friends. So A got close to the rich girl on purpose and made relationship with her. However, this relationship did not last long because the rich girl knew that A was only interested in her money. The rich girl broke off the relationship with A at last.

The other injuring friendship is a betrayal of friends. This type of friendship is often illustrated in a drama or movie. We can see a main character lose his whole fortune because he guaranteed his friend's debt. In this case, the friend did not keep the promise and just ran up so the main character has to repay the debt of his friend. Trust between two friends is broken and this result may lead the main character to not believe all of his friends.

Spurious friends and betrayal of friends is the representatives of injuring friendship. As we have a lot of chance to make friends during lifetime, we had better look out who are sincere friends of us.

  3. It is interesting that you have explained the reason of friendship ends. I have a same view that betrayal can injures the friendship and trust is very important source between friends. It would be great to write the conclusion more precisely. / Yun jung hwan
