D-2 What do you think of the old Judge?

I think the old judge in the story is a wise man, for he surely knows how to handle with angry person and knows how to make others to follow what he intends. In my opinion, making others to follow according to your intention needs wisdom, and the judge in this story seems to use his wisdom well. For instance, an angry woman visits him to ask for a divorce with her husband, whose marriage with her is less than a year. So the judge determines to change her attitude towards the husband, however, if he had said something directly towards her to change her attitude, it would haven't worked out, as she already had made up her mind to end the relationship. So, instead of speaking out of the solution directly, the judge gives her a difficult task so that she would gradually get to know the solution to the problem by herself. Through this way judge could have made the woman to follow what he was intended to do without her resistance.

E-3 Would the story end happily, if father Paul does not speak to Laurence about Esther?

Suppose father Paul have said nothing about Esther to Laurence I do not think the story would have ended happily. In my view, she still would have left the mission, for she was missing her home and family. And her attempt to marry Laurence would have failed too, as people around her and Laurence will have thought their marriage is abnormal and not appropriate. Even Laurence struggles with the marriage with Esther, as he is not sure whether marrying an Indian girl is worthwhile. Overall people around her did not let her to co-exist with them in the same place. She would have left the place, for being fed up with discrimination.

  1. Hi, I'm Kim taekmin
    (D) I agree with you that the old judge is a wise man, however I think your argument that a wise man make others to follow what he intends makes me think of someone who's manipulating others on their back, not a wise man.

    (E) I also think the discrimination towards Esther would eventually hurt their romantic interests too. Thank you:)

  2. I'm agree with your idea that the old judge is a wise man, because he made the women to find the solutiom by herself. But I also think that he used to risky method to help the women.
And(E), I think as similar as you. Their story may not be a happy ending, I guess. There would be another trouble after they get married. conflict with each other and they may finally divorced.
Thankyou for your good writing /Yun junghwan
