YiJing Mo/ pg. 25Initial draft / summer session

Both Forer and Withers indicate birth order makes influences on the constitution of one's personality and interpersonal relationship. I agree to their logical and reasonable analysis on the whole. However, I disagree with their idea concerning the only child when comparing myself.

According to Forer's writing, he says" the only child tends to think himself as a child in relation to adults. and Wither says that the only child is accustomed to fulfilling expectations from parents and thinking more about receiving rather than giving in return. Both two statements are quite not fit me in my family. Though I' m the only child ,my parents are totally not indulgent with me. They instilled an idea of independence in my mind since my childhood. They strictly asked me to finish my work on my own, if it was really tough for me, they would just give suggestions instead of helping me solve problems directly.
In addtition, they give me rights to make decisions for myself, I felt lucky that my parents haven't hovered over me since my young age as most other parents do, on the contrast, they offered me free enough space to make choices for myself in daily life like what to eat ,what to wear, what major to choose, what career to take in the future.
Furthermore, I was taught to give to gain things I want. For example, I helped my mom to do some housework so that she would give me pocket money in return, which makes me truly understand no pains ,no gains. andI 've acquired a lot of friendship due to my personality. I am considerable and would like to give a hand at once when my friends encounter in some difficulties .
In conclusion, I do not deny the logic of their descriptions, their statements may fit most families in general, but they don't match my view of myself in my family.
